Data Driven Decisions

At the NNU Doceo Center, we always say it is not about the technology. It is about deepening pedagogical practices to create a student-centered learning environment that supports learners where they are at. Sometimes this idea can sound like a dream when the reality of teaching is upon you. Between lesson planning, meetings with parents, attending committee meetings, and grading sometimes it is hard to find the time to use data to make decisions based on student need. Many teachers spend their nights and weekends grading to make these types of decisions a reality. While I am not promising that all of those nights will go away, I do have some tools they may help ease the burden of grading and make data-driven decision more of reality in the daily classroom.

Technology unlocks some tools for teachers to make personalized learning more attainable in their classroom. As we strive for a student-centered classroom, we have to get our thumb on where each student is at. When we know where our students are at with certain standards, then we can use that data to inform our small groups, interventions, one-on-one meetings, and lesson planning. Making data-driven decisions can help students drive their learning in the classroom. I would encourage you to let students know where they are at and work on short, specific goals with them.

Giving student instruction at their level can help them learn important skills and if needed fill important gaps, or extend their thinking. The following Platforms for learning can help teachers administer formative assessments to drive their teaching and students’ learning.

  1. Google Forms- Google Forms are a great way to quickly get feedback, reflection, or a formative assessment from students. They have just added a new feature to forms that allow you to turn your form into a quiz. Click here for an overview. This feature integrates add-ons such as Flubaroo that you may have used in the past.

  2. Goobric, Doctopus, and Google Classroom - The combination of these three Platforms help streamline grading student writing. I cannot say how much I LOVE this feature. As you grade each Google Doc entry it places your rubric at the top of the page, then when you finish grading it uploads the completed rubric plus comments to the bottom of the page. You then use Google Classroom to turn the assignment back to the students. Right? LOVE. This is the youtube video that taught me how to integrate the three platforms.

  3. Recap - This is an awesome tool to quickly collect student reflections, responses, or takeaways from learning. The teacher creates a prompt and students respond via recording a video. The teacher can choose a length for response and done! Here is an overview of the platform.

  4. Plickers- this is a “low” tech option to get quick data from students. To use pickers you print QR Cards for each student and then use your teacher device to scan the room and collect student answers. This one minute video shows a classroom using Plickers. a.   5. Quizizz and Kahoot- These two Platforms operate the same way, but their formats look different. Finding the one that works best for each situation is up to you! Kahoot is a little more “game-like” than Quizizz. Students love both platforms though! The student can either complete the formative assessments student-paced or teacher paced. The great thing about these Platforms is that teachers can download all quiz data to a spreadsheet. You can quickly see if a student answered correctly or not and then where you need to go from there. Both of these Platforms just released new features and you can read about them in this blog post.
